Stick (Arc) Welders
Stick and arc welders with the makers' output, input power, duty cycle and rod sizes side by side.
Stick welding uses a flux-coated rod as the electrode, so it needs no gas and copes with rust, paint residue and wind better than wire processes. It's the low-cost workhorse for farm repairs, structural steel and outdoor work.
OSHA ties stick-welding current to electrode size in its shade table: 60 to 160 amps covers 3/32 to 5/32-inch rods and calls for at least shade 8. Each row shows the rod sizes the maker states.
